Job Summary

The Director of Finance provides strategic leadership and oversight of FreedomWorks’ financial operations. This position is responsible for maintaining the organization’s financial integrity through sound accounting practices, financial controls, budgeting, reporting, compliance, and effective stewardship of organizational resources.

As a member of the Directors Team, the Director provides financial insight to support organizational decision-making and ensures Finance systems effectively support the mission and operations of FreedomWorks. This position leads Finance staff and works collaboratively across departments to promote accountability, efficiency, compliance, and long-term organizational stability.

Key Responsibilities

1. Financial Management & Reporting

• Lead the organization’s accounting and financial operations, including budgeting, financial reporting, banking, cash management, payroll oversight, accounts payable & receivable, and financial controls.
• Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Monitor organizational financial performance and provide leadership with meaningful analysis, forecasts, and recommendations to support informed decision-making.

2. Budget, Controls & Compliance

• Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial monitoring in collaboration with executive leadership and department directors.
• Establish and maintain effective financial policies, internal controls, and procedures that safeguard organizational assets and promote fiscal responsibility.
• Oversee financial compliance, audits, grants, and contribution accounting, and applicable reporting requirements.

3. Financial Strategy & Organizational Stewardship

• Advise the Executive Director and leadership team of financial planning, organizational sustainability, financial risk, and opportunities affecting the organization.
• Partner with department leaders to strengthen financial accountability, evaluate resource needs, and ensure organizational resources are used effectively in support of the mission.

4. Department Leadership & Collaboration

• Lead and develop Finance staff while establishing clear departmental priorities, processes, and performance expectation.
• Collaborate across departments and with organizational leadership to ensure Finance functions are responsive, reliable, and effectively integrated with broader organizational operations.
• Oversee general Finance operations, ensuring accurate, timely, and efficient execution of day-to-day financial processes and responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Alignment with and commitment to FreedomWorks; mission, values, and faith-based approach to reentry & recovery.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, finance, or financial management.
• Experience with budgeting, financial controls, audits, accounting systems, and financial compliance.
• Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to supervise staff, establish accountability, and manage multiple organizational priorities.
• Experience in nonprofit financial management and accounting.
• Experience with grant accounting, restricted funds, government-funded programs, or other complex nonprofit funding structures preferred.
• Ability to pass a DHS background study and complete required mandated reporter training
