Chief Executive Officer Opportunity

AGA seeks a visionary, strategic, and mission-driven Chief Executive Officer to lead one of the most respected organizations in healthcare through a period of significant opportunity and transformation. Reporting to the Governing Board, the CEO will provide enterprise leadership across the organization, working closely with physician leaders, staff, members, volunteers, and external stakeholders to strengthen AGA’s impact, relevance, and influence across the digestive health ecosystem.

The CEO will shape and execute a future-focused strategy that advances AGA’s role in research, clinical practice, education, advocacy, innovation, and membership. This leader will evaluate priorities and investments, strengthen organizational focus and accountability, and position AGA to respond effectively to evolving healthcare, scientific, technological, and policy landscapes.

Externally, the CEO will serve as AGA’s primary ambassador and thought leader, strengthening the organization’s voice across healthcare, science, public policy, industry, and the broader medical association community. The CEO will build partnerships across diverse constituencies while advancing AGA’s mission to improve digestive health and support clinicians, researchers, and patients worldwide.

Senior executive leadership experience in a complex healthcare, scientific, association, or mission-driven organization, including responsibility for enterprise strategy, operations, and organizational performance.

Demonstrated success leading an organization or major enterprise function through change, including strategic realignment, business model evolution, program prioritization, financial discipline, culture stewardship, and stakeholder engagement.

• Experience working effectively with a governing board, physician leaders, volunteer leaders, or other influential stakeholder groups, with the ability to shape strategy, build alignment, support strong governance, and translate ideas into execution.

Strong financial and operational acumen, including experience with resource allocation, revenue diversification, and disciplined decision-making.

Proven ability to strengthen member, customer, or constituent value in a changing market, informed by a nuanced understanding of the dynamic needs of core constituents

Familiarity with healthcare and the pressures affecting physicians, researchers, academic medicine, private practice, and other relevant constituents.

Track record as an external ambassador, advocate, convener, or spokesperson who can represent an organization with credibility across industry, policy, media, scientific, and partner settings.

• Experience building and empowering senior teams, fostering collaboration across silos, developing talent, and creating a culture of trust, accountability, inclusion, and high performance.

Exposure to innovation, technology, AI, data strategy, digital transformation, or emerging business models, with the ability to assess opportunity, risk, organizational readiness, and mission alignment.

Advanced degree preferred; relevant senior healthcare leadership experience, association leadership, clinical/scientific credibility, or equivalent experience will be considered.
