Director of Finance / Controller (Remote) | NBOA: Business Leadership for Independent Schools
Remote, The Director of Finance / Controller is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of NBOA, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial processes and reporting. This role serves as a critical partner to the Chief Financial and Operations Officer, providing hands-on execution and support across the full range of accounting functions, including financial reporting, transactional processing, payroll, audit preparation, and financial systems management.
Working under the direction of the Chief Financial and Operations Officer, the Director of Finance / Controller helps translate organizational financial priorities into consistent, disciplined execution, maintaining strong internal controls and supporting efficient, well-documented financial operations. The position plays a key role in supporting the organization’s budgeting processes, financial analysis, and audit readiness, while ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
In addition, the Director of Finance / Controller provides financial and administrative support for select activities of NBOA Advisory Services, including transactional accounting, contract administration, and financial tracking, as part of the organization’s broader financial management responsibilities.
Essential Responsibilities
Accounting and Financial Operations
Manage day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash receipts, deposits, and disbursements
Execute the monthly accounting close cycle, including journal entries, reconciliations, and account analyses
Maintain accurate financial recordkeeping and reporting systems in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
Ensure proper revenue recognition and expense allocation across organizational activities
Monitor accounts receivable and support collection efforts
Support cash flow management and banking activities under the direction of the Chief Financial and Operations Officer
Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures
Financial Reporting, Budgeting, and Analysis
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, schedules, and account analyses
Support the development and monitoring of the annual budget and periodic forecasts under the direction of the Chief Financial and Operations Officer
Analyze financial performance and provide variance analysis and insights
Assist with long-range financial planning and financial modeling as needed
Audit, Compliance, and Risk Management
Prepare audit schedules, workpapers, and supporting documentation for the annual audit
Serve as a primary point of contact for auditors during audit fieldwork
Support the preparation of Form 990 and other required filings
Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal policies
Assist in monitoring and strengthening internal controls and financial risk management practices
Payroll, Benefits, and Financial Administration
Oversee payroll processing and ensure accuracy of payroll accounting and reporting
Support benefits-related financial administration, including reconciliation and reporting
Maintain appropriate accounting for compensation, benefits, and related liabilities
Systems and Process Management
Manage and support financial systems, including Sage Intacct (financial accounting system), Bill.com (accounts payable and disbursements), iMIS (association management system and revenue integration), and other financial and reporting tools as applicable
Ensure accurate integration and reconciliation between systems
Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and automation
Maintain organized financial records and documentation
NBOA Advisory Services Financial Support
Support the financial administration of NBOA Advisory Services engagements
Assist in the creation, distribution, and organization of school engagement agreements and accompanying independent contractor agreements
Manage accounts receivable and accounts payable related to Advisory Services engagements
Support transactional accounting for Advisory Services activities, ensuring accurate coding and reporting
Assist with consolidation of Advisory Services financials with NBOA financial reporting
Support tax compliance and related documentation for Advisory Services activities
Organizational Support
Provide financial data and reporting support for leadership, board materials, and Finance and Audit Committee work
Partner with staff across the organization to support budget tracking and financial processes
Contribute to a collaborative, service-oriented work environment
Perform other duties as assigned in alignment with position responsibilities and organizational goals
Qualifications
BA or BS in accounting, finance, or related field required; CPA, CAE and/or advanced degree preferred
5-7 years of progressively responsible accounting and financial management experience, preferably in a nonprofit or association environment
Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
Demonstrated experiences managing accounting operations, financial reporting, and audit processes
- Experience with financial systems such as Sage Intacct, Bill.com, and similar platforms
- Experience with association management systems or comparable tools is preferred
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suit, particularly Excel

Ability to travel as required, at minimum, approximately one week in either February or March, and for 3-day staff retreats in July and December
